GROWING THROUGH REFLECTION
If we study human brain function, we learn our brains are simply not wired for holding massive amounts of data. Unless we meaningfully code our brain to incorporate what we learn, we are far less likely to retain new information or improve the way we operate.
Reflection facilitates the process of coding your brain to always be incorporating new learnings.
The model below provides a straight forward method of reflection.
It may appear simple, but make no mistake, the act of reflection is very powerful. Without reflection, we move on without integrating our learnings. Practicing reflection, is a bit like practicing gratitude. Even though its simple, it’s the practice itself that holds the power.
So let’s look at the model.
WHEN TO APPLY IT:
Whenever a coachee has completed a set task, met a milestone, or undertaken an action that was a stretch for them, then it’s time to look at the ‘Reflection Model’. Try and apply it as often as you can, as is meaningful in the coaching process.
Warning: It may feel a little weird at first, but if you make reflection a keystone ritual in your coaching practice, you will move from a good coach to a great coach.
HOW TO APPLY IT
The Reflection Model is a cyclical model to represent that it should never end. In the process of growth we just keep going round and round the questions as our learning and insight spirals up.
Boxes one and two are about unpacking what happened.
Starting with what was valuable allows us to immediately hone in on the most effective part of the learning rather then needing to hear a blow by blow recall. What was learned turns what was valuable and applies a lense of what did you learn to that valuable insight.
Boxes three and four are about applying what was learnt.
How can we take what was valuable and learnt and assist the coach to apply that knowledge into the future. This is the part, where, as a coach, you give your coachee a gift. Humans are naturally great at making these future connection. We are wired to survive in the now. To support your coachee to consider learning into the future gifts them with insight they may not have otherwise naturally arrived at.
Because the model is quite simple, let’s not spend anymore time explaining it, but let’s explore the power of it by applying it to your learning during this program. Head now to the reflection activity for this bite to apply the REFLECTION MODEL.
