NOW THINGS ARE GETTING INTERESTING…
We’ve explored your approach to and intention around coaching. We’ve walked through how to set up a safe and effective coaching session. Now we start to crack into the details of how to coach. These final two sessions within this module will guide you through all four stages of the COACHING MASTERY framework.
This session will cover stage one and two: DIRECTION & NAVIGATION.
THE FOUR ELEMENTS OF COACHING MASTERY
First up is DIRECTION. Let’s get things on track and on the same page as early as possible. During the DIRECTION stage you’ll be mapping out measures of success and creating really clear goals. You’ll also use this opportunity to establish how the coaching relationship will work and figure out what resources you’ll need.
Then NAVIGATION. After we’ve set direction, it’s time to prepare for the route in advance, so NAVIGATION is our next key stage in the framework. Y’see having a set of goals and aspirations but not preparing for potential roadblocks or challenges…well, it’s just wishful thinking. This is where we take the time to think through any barriers or limitations that could crop up, and ways to establish accountability milestones. Let’s check it out shall we?

It can be the most frustrating thing can’t it? Watching someone sit in a place of no momentum? Watching ourselves sit in a place of no momentum?
They call it the ‘doldrums’ for a reason; even the word itself seems depressing. How can we break out of the doldrums? How can we help others break out? Let’s first understand why people get stuck.

Google maps. BEST. INVENTION. EVER. Well, maybe that’s debatable, but to a person who is geographically challenged, it’s gotta be up there right? I mean, how convenient is it?
Whenever you go to find directions in google maps, it asks you two simple questions; where are you now, and where do you want to be? Could it be that simple to set direction in coaching too?

How do we support our coachees to prepare in advance for the roadblocks that might turn up and block their progress?
If we can crack this nut, we are setting them up for a much greater chance of success. Short of a crystal ball though, how do we do this? How can we possible know what’s up ahead. It’s easier than you think if you are armed with the most helpful questions.
HOW ARE YOU PROGRESSING?

Have YOU ever being in the doldrums? Maybe lost your way a bit?
Think about a time in the past when you did feel like you were in the doldrums and consider the four reasons given in this bite. Take on a little self-diagnosis and see if you can identify what was the cause for your doldrums.
They say, in leadership, we should never ask people to go, where we haven’t been willing to go ourselves.
Same is true as a coach. If you really want to catapult your coachees experiences, make sure you have first challenged yourself with the same questions you’ll challenge them with.
You have set the direction that you want to be a coach. Great call. Hopefully this is aligned to your purpose and you are excited about this direction. How about applying the wisdom of the Navigation model to your approach to coaching?
Your reflection challenge for this bite is to identify your own roadblocks.
IS THAT A WRAP?
